Venus figurines are series of prehistoric figurines, that is, small statues of people with common attributes (thus, many women are depicted as apparently obese or pregnant), found from Western Europe to Siberia. These objects were carved from soft stone (such as limestone), bone or ivory, or molded from clay and fired.
Magdalena Modrić with Venus Figurines of Peljesac, 2024
We know so many of them at this point; Figurines like these appeared rarely for almost 200 years, the first of which was the "Immodest Venus", i.e. Venus Impudique, found in 1864, whose name comes as a contrast to the sculptures categorized as "Venus Pudica" or modest Venuses with hands they hide the breasts and genitals. The last one is Venus from Waldstetten, found in 2015. It is made of quartzite on which man has left a minimal mark with subtle stylization.
The figurines were found on a hill on peninsula Peljesac, Croatia.
Four of figurines were found in the graves close to the cave, while five of them were found in a fire pit inside the cave.
Meet the figurines.
