Mythology decks are back and available in limited quantities. Whether you are fan of mythology, folklore or storytelling, you may find this game ideal for picnics, hikes or long evenings by the fire with a glass of wine.
Three years ago (or a little more) I designed and illustrated a deck of playing cards inspired by folklore, mythology, history, perhaps even horror. In a long period before that, I wanted to make my own scopa deck for triestine game I love to play. A little later, I decided to make an attempt in creating a tarot deck, although I knew nothing about tarot and never before or after illustrating it have I tried using it. I loved learning about it, but after the process of studying the rules of how each card has to look and what it has to contain, I wanted to create my own game without rules of illustrating, or rules of playing.
They contain illustrated motifs with no rules; you may play them as you like.
However, one of my suggestions is;
(For two players)
Each starts with three cards, building up a story together with one motif in each turn, replacing the one that has been "spent" with the new card. The "Joker Gorgon" card means you don't need to use a certain motif; just go with narrative freely.
It may go similarly with multiple players, too.
I created a storytelling game which I occasionally included in some board games I was working on after, but it was made to work on its own, and I was later adding more cards. I've made a selection of motifs that were taken out (mostly) from folklore and mythology that had influence on my childhood, as well as my later artistic creation.
You may make your own rules, but the way I've mostly used throughout the years was:
Each player starts with three cards, and players build up a story together. Every turn a player decides which motif he's about to use, and makes up a longer or shorter part of a story in which the motif is included. After the turn ends, he replaces the old card with a new one, always having three cards in his hands. There is just one card that allows the player to tell anything, without being limited to a motif. Could you use the deck in a way you would use a tarot deck? Probably.
They go well with artist's/writer's block, just thinking about things, barbecuing.
